What is Bentonite Clay?

Never heard of bentonite clay before? First, where have you been? Bentonite Clay is my favorite, favorite, favorite clay. I use it on my hair and skin and the results are amazing. I have less hair shedding and detangling my hair is not an hour process. Bentonite clay is a “healing clay” that cleanses and heals the hair and body by removing TOXINS.

Bentonite Clay is also called Montmorillonite Clay, it stems from the region of France called Montmorillon, where the clay was first discovered. Today the clay is harvested mostly in The US, France, and Italy. “Bentonite” is actually the trade name that the clay has been given, but people, for the most part, speak about Montmorillonite and Bentonite clay interchangeably and are referring to the same product. Bentonite clay is composed of ash made from volcanos.
Bentonite Clay Benefits

The largest known source of bentonite clay is found in Fort Benton, Wyoming where numerous volcanos are present, so the name of the clay stems from the town where today much of the supply is still harvested. Know we know the background, what does it exactly do?

How does it work?

Bentonite Clay is a unique clay due to its ability to produce an “electrical charge” when hydrated. Upon contact with a fluid, its electrical components change, giving it the ability to absorb toxins. Bentonite is known for its ability to absorb and remove toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals. Yes, you can even ingest it!!!!! It has an alkalizing effect on the body and when taken correctly, it can help balance gut bacteria. Our hair and skin are exposed to toxins and chemicals on a daily basis. This is where bentonite clay comes into play, it will detox and remove those chemicals and toxins, leaving your hair and skin clean and toxin free. Bentonite Clay will make your hair thick and shiny….For bearded gents and curly hair girls, it hydrates, moisturizes, de-frizzes softens, and banishes dryness while encouraging shine.

How to use Bentonite Clay for your hair or a beard

My favorite ways to incorporate Bentonite Clay is on to my hair as a mask. Bentonite Clay is also good for your S/O beard. Many beared gents use a variety of products to maintain their beards and it's good to do a Bentonite Clay detox about once a month to remove the chemical residue from the hair and to detox the skin beneath.

Bentonite Clay

I prefer to use a bentonite clay mask on my hair once every two weeks. Just an FYI, when making your clay mask make sure it does not come in contact with metal before use. Mix with a wood, plastic or glass spoon for best results.

This is my recipe for my detox clay hair mask:

• 1/2 cup (or 4oz) of Bentonite Clay
• 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
• 1 tablespoon of Jamaican black castor oil
• 1 tablespoon of sweet almond oil
• 3 tablespoons of aloe vera juice, water or ACV (apple cider vinegar) The PH level is between 4-6 and when it is mixed with bentonite clay, the pH will be neutralized.

I add my clay first then my oils then mix it up until I have a smooth, minimally lumpy mixture that is roughly the consistency of Greek yogurt. After you've completely coated your hair with the mask, cover it with a plastic cap, saran wrap, or plastic bag for 20-30 minutes. Then rinse and follow up with a conditioner. Your hair will be hydrated, moisturized, defined and frizz-free. YASSSS… your hair will say “Thank You”.
